The Change of Seasons - Menopause Primer

Today we welcome a guest post from Keitha Story-Stephenson, owner and CEO of BlueSky Wellness Center in Decatur, TX.  Keitha has a Master's Degree in marriage and family counseling and a Doctorate in Nutritional Science and received the "Female Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Health and Wellness" and the Cambridge "Who's Who" 2009-2010 Honored Award for Registry of Executives, Professionals and Entrepreneurs.

Menopause and peri-menopause are not diseases of the body, as the current television advertisements tend to suggest - a “condition” requiring medication. It is a period of transition, a sort of reverse puberty, if you will. Defined as the cessation of menses, this transition comes often with a host of noticeable body changes that tend to interrupt the modern woman and her busy lifestyle.
These changes can include disrupted sleep patterns, restlessness, night sweats, hot flashes, forgetfulness, mood changes, inability to concentrate, vaginal dryness, limited libido - list goes on. But, it is a transition not a new state of living. It will pass and there are things you can do to ease the journey!
In Alternative Health Care, there are various combinations readily available. These are for “average” management of the changes in your body. Everyone is unique and can require selective “tweaking” to find the correct combo for you. Look for products that are not estrogen based. Natural sources of progesterone and phytoestrogen are found in black cohosh, wild yam, red clover. Sage in cooking or as a tea can dry the intense perspiration loss from hot flashes.
Limit soy intake in your diet. These tend to increase estrogen dominance. Look for whole natural foods that feed the body and protect bones and heart. Increase sources of calcium, potassium and magnesium both during and after menopause. Your multi -vitamin is not enough! If hot flashes are severe, avoid hot and spicy foods that can act as a stimulate.
If you have a family history of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, osteoporosis or Alzheimer’s disease, discuss your options with your gynecologist or alternative health provider. Form a team with these professionals to best protect your health during this “season of change”. Stay active and use this period of life to improve and fine-tune the years before you. Your Best is still before you. Dance!
